Sunday Clutter: Trump, Joe Biden, Wells Fargo, Boston Red Sox, The Good Place, Veronica Mars, John Cena, Nowhere to Run, and more
06/09/2019
Hi everyone,
Welcome back! Come on in, have a seat. How's your weekend going so far? I was running around like a madman yesterday. It was a little crazy, but it was also productive, and the weather was gorgeous, so I'll take it. I think I fell asleep about 10 seconds after going to bed, but then I woke up in the middle of the night because it sounded like there were bottle rockets going off in the driveway. However, the noise stopped right after I looked out the window. People were definitely shooting off fireworks in the neighborhood when I went to bed, but it's possible this part was a dream. It took forever to get back to sleep after that, so long story (somewhat) short, I need coffee. Fortunately, BDH and Little Buddha (who slept through the whole thing) just made a fresh pot, so grab yourself a nice medium DD, and let's clear out some Sunday Clutter.
Donald Trump backed off his threat of tariffs against Mexico on Friday after implying they forced Mexico to agree to a new deal regarding immigration. However, it turns out that Mexico reportedly agreed to most of these conditions in March, so once again, the Great Pumpkin told yet another lie about his deal-making prowess.
When he wasn't fibbing about making deals, Donald Trump was busy tweeting that the moon is part of Mars and showing everyone that he likely failed his 3rd grade science class.
Meanwhile, Eric and Donald Trump Jr. offered to buy everyone in the pub a round of beer during their recent taxpayer-funded Ireland trip, and guess what happened: That's right, the Trump boys ran out on the tab. Doesn't matter what country they're in, the Trump family is allergic to paying their bills.
It's clear that Russia interfered in the 2016 elections, so we should probably do something about improving our security, right? Not according to Senate Leader Mitch McConnell, who continues to damage our democracy in a variety of ways on a regular basis.
The first contest of the 2020 Democratic presidential primary is still months away, and that translates to multiple political lifetimes from now. However, the fact that Joe Biden has slipped in the latest Iowa poll says to us that a good portion of his lead comes from his advantage in name recognition. People already know him, and he doesn't have much room to grow from here. Biden also still needs to prove that he is the right leader for today's world, and so far, he's had a hard time avoiding leaving the impression that his entire campaign is lifted from 1988. That's a large opening for his opponents in the months ahead.
Hillary Clinton announced that her brother Tony Rodham died on Friday. No cause of death was announced. Our condolences go out to his family and friends.
Hey look at that, Wells Fargo is in trouble again. The bank paid $385 million to settle a lawsuit claiming their employees signed up customers in California for a costly car insurance program without getting consent. Hmm, Wells Fargo creating accounts without consent. Where have we heard that before?
The Boston Red Sox split their double-header with the Tampa Bay Rays yesterday. The Sox lost the first game 9-2, but they bounced back with a 5-1 victory in the nightcap, thanks to a solid outing from David Price (1 run/5 hits/10 strikeouts over 6 innings) against his original team. Don't look now, but Price is having a good season, as he improved to 4-2 with a 2.70 ERA after yesterday. Eduardo Rodriguez takes the mound for Boston as they try to split this series with Tampa Bay this afternoon.
We know a lot of people will be unhappy about the news that The Good Place is ending after next season on NBC. The show's creator Mike Schur explained in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that the upcoming fourth season was the right time to end the show from a creative standpoint. We understand the disappointment, but so few shows get to go out on their terms, we have to salute Schur and company for making this decision. Viewers can be confident they'll make sure Ted Danson, Kristen Bell, and everyone else go out in style.

Look at it this way, Kristen Bell fans, at least you can look forward to the return of Veronica Mars on Hulu. Reruns start on July 1, with new episodes on July 26. Here's a refresher on the series:
Former WWE champ John Cena has spent the past few years following Dwayne Johnson's example and trying to make the transition from pro wrestling to movies. Cena continues to copy Johnson's path with the news that he'll be appearing in the upcoming Fast & Furious 9. Johnson remains busy with the new Hobbs and Shaw franchise, but we're wondering if the two men will face off against each other again at some point down the road, either on-screen, or in the ring to fight over the title of king of the mountain here.
NCIS fans shouldn't be hoping Abby will return to the show. Actress Pauley Perrette claimed again on Friday that she was physically attacked by Mark Harmon while she was on the show. CBS doesn't appear to have commented on the most recent accusation yet.
Is Metallica working on another cover album? We've have no problem with Garage Inc. 2.
Okay kids, that's going to do it for now. Taking a trip in the wayback machine, here's Martha and the Vandellas to close things out with, "Nowhere to Run," for today's, "Song of the Day."
Thanks for stopping by, everyone. It was great to see you, as always. It sounds like it's going to be another gorgeous day, so enjoy the weather, stay out of trouble, and we'll catch up with you again for more fun soon. Until next time, that's today's Clearing out the Clutter, and we are outta here.
