Tuesday Clutter: Pittsburgh Doesn't Want Trump, Jamal Khashoggi's Fiancee Speaks, Wall Street Troubles, Red Sox Priorities, New England Patriots, Phil Collins, and more

Hi everyone,

Welcome back!  Come on in, have a seat.  I was just talking to BDH and Little Buddha about tomorrow's Red Sox championship parade.  I think we're probably going to watch it on TV.  None of us loves crowds, and the guys would have a hard time seeing anything if we stand on the sidewalk, so staying here seems like the better call.  The parade is going to throw our schedule out of whack a bit, but that's a terrific problem to have.  We'll figure out how to minimize the disruption.  In the meantime, let's see what else is going on in the world.  We've got a fresh pot of coffee, so help yourself to a nice medium DD, because it's time to clear out some Tuesday Clutter.

Pittsburgh Mayor William Peduto joined the chorus of those who want Donald Trump to postpone his visit to the city so that the focus can be on the families of the victims of this past weekend's terrible shooting.  It's a reasonable request, which we're sure the Great Pumpkin doesn't begin to understand, so the question becomes, is there anyone in the White House who can convince him to pretend he's got a shred of basic decency?  We don't like the odds.

Jamal Khashoggi's fiancee criticized Donald Trump for putting money before justice when it comes to the journalist's murder in the Saudi consulate in Turkey.  Hatice Cengiz said, “President Trump should help reveal the truth and ensure justice be served. He should not pave the way for a cover-up of my fiance’s murder. Let’s not let money taint our conscience and compromise our values.”   That implies Trump has a conscience or values, whereas reality has repeatedly demonstrated otherwise.

Troubles continue on Wall Street, as the S&P 500 is officially in correction territory (down 10% from its recent high) and is down 1.21% for the year.  Traders seem to think the problems are largely driven by Donald Trump's trade war with China, but that can't be, since we all know Trump's a financial genius who makes the economy boom just by thinking it, thanks to his incredible brain, right?

Elon Musk is back at it again on Twitter.  Good luck to Tesla investors.  Maybe everything will work out just fine, but when the head of a company comes across as this erratic, giving him your money doesn't seem like a great idea.

Apparently dogs can be trained to sniff out malaria in dirty socks, which is just reason #5 million why dogs are awesome.

The World Champion Boston Red Sox already have a number of large contract issues to work out before the 2019 season.  The vote here is that they take care of free agent Nathan Eovaldi first.  The righty showed that he's worth a long-term investment, and if they get him locked down, it may help the team with any discussions about the futures of David Price and Chris Sale.

Boston Herald writer Michael Silverman explains how the World Series MVP is decided, and it seems a little odd.  There are only five sportswriters who vote, and two of them have to split their vote?  We were good with Steve Pearce winning, but there would have been no argument here if David Price won, or if the two of them were co-MVP's, so the result seemed fine, but the process feels off.

It took them a while to get going, but the New England Patriots beat the Buffalo Bills 25-6 last night.  Tom Brady and company were up 9-3 at the half, and one wondered if perhaps they had all stayed up late to watch all 18 innings of Game 3 of the World Series on Friday.  However, the defense kept Buffalo in check, and the Pats eventually scored two touchdowns in the 4th quarter, one one a 1-yard run from James White, and the other on a 84-yard interception return from safety Devin McCourty.  Hey, ugly wins count as much as the pretty wins.  The Patriots improve to 6-2 on the season, and now they move on to face the 3-3-1 Green Bay Packers next Sunday night, because apparently no New England team will play a game at a reasonable hour ever again.

Anyone surprised that the Cleveland Browns fired head coach Hue Jackson and offensive coordinator Todd Haley yesterday?  The Browns were 3-36-1 under Jackson, so it's not like it was a close call.  The question here is if rookie quarterback Baker Mayfield's career will be permanently damaged, because it doesn't seem likely that this team is going to get on track anytime soon.  Of course, his fate may have been sealed the day he was drafted.

It's a little surprising to see Phil Collins is back on tour again after saying in 2011 he was going to retire.  You usually can't take those claims seriously from any musician (see:  Ozzy Osbourne), but it seemed like Collins also had some health issues which might actually keep him off the road.  We were big fans back in the 1980's when Collins dominated the music charts, and the concert we went to in the mid-1990's felt like a two-hour karaoke session as the crowd eagerly sang long with every tune.

Meanwhile, Lars Ulrich is looking for Metallica to last another 20-25 years, which would make the drummer 75-80 years old at that point.  Hey, if the Rolling Stones can keep going until the end of time, these guys can find a way to do it.

Okay kids, that's going to do it for now.  Let's have Phil Collins close things out with this live performance of, "Take Me Home," for today's, "Song of the Day."

Thanks for stopping by, everyone.  It was great to see you, as always.  Enjoy the rest of your day, be good, and we'll meet you back here again for more fun soon.  Until next time, that's today's Clearing out the Clutter, and we are outta here.
