Tuesday Clutter: Kavanaugh Stakes Get Higher, Julie Chen, Coca-Cola, Boston Red Sox, Josh Gordon to the Patriots, Captain Marvel, Counting Crows, and more
09/18/2018
Hi everyone,
Welcome back! How are you? We were just watching the rain. Guess there's no need for me to water the garden today. BDH and Little Buddha were also talking about how we're back to waking up in the dark, so they need to remember to turn on the kitchen light before they make the coffee. Yeah, things will definitely go smoother if they can see what they're doing, right guys? Right. Fortunately, they remembered this morning, and there's a fresh pot on the counter, so help yourself to a nice medium DD, and let's clear out some Tuesday Clutter.
Brett Kavanaugh's Supreme Court nomination was supposed to be voted on by the Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday. Now it's been postponed, as Kavanaugh and Christine Blasey Ford will testify before the committee on Monday about Ford's accusations that Kavanaugh physically and sexually assaulted her in high school. Again, there's no reason to think the GOP has any interest in doing the right thing from a moral perspective, but allowing Kavanaugh on the court in today's #MeToo world is begging female voters to vote Democrat in November, so if decency fails, maybe self-interest will prevail. You know it's a different situation when Donald Trump is showing restraint for once (although that must be killing him.) There will be many eyes on Senators Susan Collins (R-Maine) and Jeff Flake (R-Arizona) as that hearing unfolds. Both have tried to portray themselves as independent minds who don't just follow the party line, but it's time to back up those words with actions.
The stakes will be high on Monday. (pic via cnn.com)
Julie Chen is leaving The Talk, following the firing of her husband, former CBS CEO Les Moonves, in the wake of multiple accusations against Moonves. There was no way Chen could have stayed on the show, given the scandal that centered on her husband, but will she be able to last on Big Brother? The wife shouldn't have to pay for the sins of the husband, but remaining on CBS seems like it would be an ongoing distraction, and perhaps everyone would be better off if she changed networks.
The Trump administration says it will only allow 30,000 refugees into the country in 2019, a dramatic drop from the range of 48,000 - 85,000 in recent years. What a disgraceful decision and a black eye for this country.
Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) has been reduced to claiming that opponent Beto O'Rourke wants to ban BBQ. That's just embarrassing.
Congratulations to Lori Trahan on winning the Democratic primary for the Massachusetts Third Congressional District. Trahan was declared the winner after a recount gave her a 145-vote margin over Dan Koh. This is another reminder that voting matters, friends. Trahan now goes on to face Rick Green (R) and an independent candidate in the general election.
Coca-Cola has been looking for years for other beverages to produce as soda sales decline, and now the soft drink giant is reportedly considering marijuana-infused drinks. It certainly seems like a rapidly growing market, but does cannabidiol impact a drink's flavor at all? Of course, there are many ways to deal with that if it does.
From the bottom of our hearts, the staff would like to wish you all a happy National Cheeseburger Day. May it be everything you hoped for and then some.
The Boston Red Sox look to clinch their third-straight AL East title as they take on the New York Yankees in the Bronx this afternoon. Boston's magic number is two, so all they have to do is one one out of the three games against New York to clinch the division. Nathan Eovaldi takes the mound for Boston today.
Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees radio announcers Joe Castiglione and John Sterling will swap places for an inning during today's game. We don't care for that at all. Goes against the natural order of things.
New England Patriots fans are hyperventilating at the news that the Pats acquired wide receiver Josh Gordon from the Cleveland Browns in exchange for a 2019 fifth-round draft pick. Gordon, who is making the NFL veteran minimum salary of $790,000, has dealt with legal problems and substance abuse issues over the years, but New England desperately needs help at the wide receiver position, and this is about as low-stakes a deal as you could find. Maybe he'll be the latest Patriots reclamation project to blossom working with Bill Belichick and Tom Brady, and maybe he'll have zero impact. Either way, it should be interesting to watch this play out.
Things continue to go well in Pittsburgh, as Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown got into a Twitter beef with a former member of the team's public relations staff who said Brown's importance to the team is overrated. We're sure master disciplinarian head coach Mike Tomlin has all of this under control though, right?
The first official Captain Marvel trailer is supposed to come out this morning, so we'll have it for you here if it's posted online before we say goodbye today!
Patrick Stewart will apparently be in the next Charlie's Angels reboot as one of multiple Bosleys. Wait, what?
Congratulations to all of this year's Emmy winners. What did you think of last night's show?
Don't know if Roseanne Barr really just announced how her character dies on The Connors, or if she's just ranting, but it's certainly an effective way to get people to watch and see for themselves.
Okay kids, that's going to do it for now. Seems appropriate to close thing out here with the Counting Crows and, "Rain King," for today's, "Song of the Day."
Three notes into that tune, and it's immediately 1994 again.
Thanks for stopping by, everyone. It was great to see you, as always. BDH and Little Buddha want to make sure you know you're welcome to come back later if you want to watch the Sox - Yankees game with us this afternoon. Otherwise, enjoy the rest of your day, be careful if you have to drive in this rain, because we've heard about a threat of flooding, and we'll see you back here again for more fun soon. Until next time, that's today's Clearing out the Clutter, and we are outta here.
WAIT!
The Captain Marvel trailer just arrived! Phew, that was close. Let's see what we've got here:
