(Book Review) Hope Never Dies

There are millions across the country who long for a return to the days when Barack Obama and Joe Biden were in the White House.  The bad news is that they won't be returning to fix our immigration policy.  The good news is that the two men reunite in the new action-packed crime thriller/bromance parody, Hope Never Dies, by Andrew Shaffer. (release date: July 10)

The book is set a few months after the 2016 election, and Joe Biden is still figuring out what to next with his life.  His former best friend Barack Obama doesn't seem to be having that problem, as he hobnobs around the world, while Biden looks on jealously.  However, the two men are reunited when an Amtrak conductor Biden knew dies under mysterious circumstances.  It seems like the authorities may be quick to sweep this one under the rug and move on to their next case, but Obama and Biden need to find out the truth.  With that, we're off.

Hope Never Dies is told from Biden's perspective, and Shaffer seems to delight in writing in the former VP's voice.  You can immediately picture Biden putting on his Ray-Ban sunglasses and eagerly dropping a David Caruso-esque quip, as the always calm and rational Obama rolls his eyes.   The banter between the two men is the highlight of the book.  These are obviously caricatures, but they're grounded enough in reality to make the story hum along.  We would have no objections to Hope Never Dies being turned into a movie, as long as the two men played themselves, of course.  If not a full-fledged film, someone should at least have the mini-series ready to replace Sherlock on PBS at some point down the road.  Look out, Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman.

This is a light and entertaining story that could be enjoyed during a trip to the beach.  It's a silly tale, which is meant as a compliment.  Hope Never Dies is a pleasant distraction from the world around us, and fans of these two men will enjoy it, as long as they don't take it too seriously.  It appears there will be more mysteries to come, and we look forward to Obama and Biden saving the country once again.
