August 2009

Got up early today to pay my respects at the Kennedy Library. We got there at about 7:30am, which was good timing. The line wasn't too long when we arrived, but it seemed to double in length about five minutes after we got there. I'm horrible with distances, but we started about halfway between the UMASS Boston buildings and the Library. It was a fairly quiet and fast moving line. People mostly stopped talking as they entered the library, but even still, the silence in the room where Senator Kennedy's flag-draped coffin lay was almost overwhelming. As I passed the... Still Surprising and Other Clutter

Obviously we all knew Ted Kennedy had a terminal illness, and there were a number of recent signs that time was running out quickly (i.e. not attending his sister's funeral, his autobiography release date getting pushed up a month, his letter to MA officials about his replacement in the Senate), but there was still a huge sense of surprise when I heard he died. I felt like I had been punched in the gut as if I had never seen this coming. I don't know, every day of my life has had three consistent elements: I get up, I go... Read more →

Choose the Ending

I just bought my first lottery ticket in ten years after my boss Jesse told me she bought one. I'm not sure why that inspired me to do it, but the three dollars is spent, so there's no point in over-thinking it now (Yes, in case you were wondering, I am THIS cheap). I played three complex sequences involving combinations of my birthday, Melanie's birthday, and a few other secret numbers. (I can't tell you the whole thing or else you'll buy the winning ticket too, and only children do NOT share. That's Rule #1 of Only Children--no sharing! What's... Read more →

Friends with The Most Interesting Man in the World

I'm sure you've all seen the Dos Equis "Most Interesting Man in the World" commercials. You know, "He speaks Russian in French, he clips his fingernails with his toenails," etc. There are several different versions, but they all have the same scene at the end--four people sitting at a table in a bar--man, woman, Most Interesting Man in the World, and another woman. Look carefully the next time this commercial comes on, because the guy sitting on the left at that table is my step-brother, Brett London. Brett has been busting his a## as an actor for years now, and... Read more →

Monday's Lunch Ramblings

Happy Monday everyone. Just a few bits of Clutter from this weekend while enjoying a quality lunch (A chicken and broccoli calzone from Star Market, a Blueberry Cliff Bar and a strawberry yogurt)... I'm not a violent person, but I wish bad things for every so-called Red Sox fan who left Saturday's game early (you know who you are). They should at the very least be banned from Fenway for life. I don't care how hot and humid it was at Fenway on Saturday, the Red Sox rebounded nicely from their blowout the night before by crushing the YANKEES. If... Read more →

Friday Laundry

A few notes while doing this week's laundry and enjoying a DD Ice Coffee: Newest headline from The Big Papi News Desk: When it's clicking, it's on. Cheers to the news about Jerry Remy's return. I've enjoyed most of the fill-in's, but no one compares to the Rem Dawg. I've said it before, and I'll say it again, I thought the Red Sox never should have let Alex Gonzalez go in the first place, and I'm excited he's back. He can't hit very well, but he's the best fielding shortstop I've ever seen play for this team, and I'll gladly... Read more →

Only In My Dreams

I met Denzel Washington, and he wouldn't take a picture with me. I was sitting in a car on Commonwealth Ave, by Boston Pizza Express, when Spike Lee popped his head in the driver's side window to ask for directions. Denzel was with him, and when I recovered from my surprise and asked him for a picture, he politely said no. I managed to get out of the car and still tried to take a picture with my BlackBerry. However, I suddenly forgot how to perform this simple task. No matter what button I pressed, I couldn't get to the... Read more →

Wednesday Shots

Quick thoughts while enjoying another gourmet lunch (turkey and cheese sandwich, a blueberry Cliff Bar, and a strawberry yogurt) and continuing to struggle with the concept of "Las Vegas chic..." We probably won't know for sure until the inevitable Bob Woodward-insider book comes out, but I wonder about President Obama's supposed "retreat" from the public option as part of health care reform. Rather than signaling a concession, what if the point was to get the Left fired up to start doing a better job of pushing back against the teabaggers and their friends? What if the goal was really to... Read more →

Call Results

Thanks for weighing in, everyone. I made the call, emailed my ticket order form for the Mike Lowell event, and just got my confirmation email! There was a slight amount of physical discomfort involved with the purchase-I'm sure I won't be doing anything like this again anytime soon- but hey, you only live once, and this should be fun. It's all about taking chances, right? Right? I'm sure this sounded like a rigged poll question, but I really was debating it for most of of last week. See what happens when the clutter builds up? Maybe I should read this... Read more →
